This course is an overview on how to identify and hire the right employee for your domestic violence program. We’ll cover practical tools and tips for getting ready to hire as well as preparing you to run an effective hiring process.

Part I: Get ready to hire
In this lesson, we’ll review the steps you need to take before the hiring process begins and offer some things to think about when it comes to hiring the ideal advocate. Please work through the following activities.

- Describe your ideal candidate. List the skills, experiences, and traits this person would have. Save your writing so you can access it later!
- Read this presentation on how to develop a great job description.
- Review this sample job description, read our findings from the 2020 Wages & Benefits Survey, and check out this blog post about disclosing salary ranges.
- Practice what you’ve learned!
- Find a current advocate job description.
- Identify three things that reflect the points discussed in this lesson.
- Identify three things that could be improved.
- Write about one change you’d like to make to the job description you found and why you want to make that change.
