Creative & Confident: Taking on Difficult Advocacy Conversations with Connie Burk

February 8, 2021 @ 9:00 am 3:00 pm

Advocates know that our work involves listening and speaking with survivors (and coworkers!) about sensitive, vulnerable and controversial issues, but we don’t often spend time building our skills to step confidently into these conversations. We encounter friends and family who may be struggling with how to help, State interventions of CPS and police that put survivors and their families in greater danger, survivors use of force against their partners or others, and many other moments in survivors’ lives that don’t map easily onto the conversations advocates are trained to have.

In this workshop, using examples drawn from three decades of advocacy work, we will explore the issues that can confound advocacy, and practical tools and strategies for successful, compassionate, and effective advocacy conversations about the hard stuff.
