Violence Prevention and Cultural Resilience in Queer and Trans Pacific Islander Community

October 11, 2023 @ 11:00 am 12:30 pm

United Territories of Pacific Islanders Alliance Washington (UTOPIA Washington) is a queer and trans people of color-led, grassroots organization born out of the struggles, challenges, strength, and resilience of the Queer and Trans Pacific Islander (QTPI – “Q-T-pie”) community in South King County.

Since 2009, UTOPIA Washington has worked with QTPI leaders to create a safe, welcoming, supportive, and vibrant space for members of the community to address basic needs, build pathways toward new expanded career and life opportunities, foster a sense of common purpose, and advocate for social justice, education, and overall wellness among members of the Pacific Islander LGBTQIA+ community.

Join us as we highlight UTOPIA WA’s work at the intersections of violence prevention and cultural oppression with the strength of culture, ancestry, storytelling and environmental justice. We will learn from Taimane T Tuia’ana as she shares the powerful story of the transformative work of UTOPIA WA, their creative prevention efforts, and the work of changing culture to honor Trans people’s lives and struggle in advance of Trans Awareness Week, November 13-19th.
